How the Consortium for Ecological Law Drives Change

Research and Policy Development

The Consortium for Ecological Law conducts and commissions legal research, prepares policy proposals, and develops practical frameworks that translate ecological law principles into actionable governance tools. This research is shared with governments, international bodies, academic institutions, and civil society organizations.

International Advocacy and Engagement

The Consortium for Ecological Law engages directly with international forums including the United Nations Environment Programme, the UN General Assembly, the International Court of Justice, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the Climate Change and Biodiversity Convention’s Conference of the Parties – ensuring that ecological law perspectives shape the most consequential global environmental policy decisions.

Knowledge Sharing and Education

Through events, publications, newsletters, and partnerships with leading universities, the Consortium for Ecological Law raises awareness of ecological law principles and practical tools — with particular focus on empowering youth leaders, legal practitioners, and grassroots organizations.

Grassroots Partnership and Implementation

The Consortium for Ecological Law supports grassroots partnerships — particularly those involving Indigenous Peoples and youth leaders — helping translate global legal frameworks into local action and ensuring that the most affected communities have both a voice and a pathway to legal recourse.

Impact We Have Delivered

Supporting for Rights of Nature in UN Context

Prioritizing measures that realize gains by recognizing “rights of Nature” in international legal systems by advancing the UN Harmony with Nature Program, CEL has supported the organization of annual meetings for Harmony with Nature networks in New York.

Supporting IRENA’s Coalition for Action and Climate Justice

To advance a decade of engagements by members of CEL with IRENA for rapid deployment of nature-based energy systems, CEL supported the Pace Energy and Climate Center to become a member of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Coalition for Action (approved June 2026). In November 2025, CEL led the organization of a side-event/hybrid conference in Belém, Rio and New York: A Mandate for All: The Legal and Civic Imperative to Confront the Climate Emergency.

Launching Biodiversity Priority Grasslands

Protecting 30% of Grasslands for Biodiversity and Carbon Sequestration by 2030, follows on the work for the Protection and Restoration of Diverse Native Grasslands at the World Conservation Congress of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in October 2025 (resolution 005) in cooperation with French NGO Noé, American Prairie and others. Ecological Law empowered young professionals to take an active role in the preparation and passing of this resolution, among key priorities for impact at the IUCN Congress. Our goal is to mobilize international cooperation restoring, enhancing biodiversity, and securing the future of these ecosystems for generations to come.

Supporting Guardians of the Sea (Philippines) petition campaign of youth for MARINE RESERVATIONS FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

To advance on this petition campaign, CEL organized presentations by Tony Oposa Jr. as part of Earth Week 2026 activities at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, and the ceremonial filings of petitions with the UN Secretary General, the United Nations Environmental Programme and UN Missions in New York, starting with the Mission of the Philippines to the United Nations on April 21, 2026.
